I f the dealer is trying to sell you this extended warranty, I would be asking why I needed it. If the truck needs it, then I would tell them that maybe this truck isn't for me because it sounds like it is going to need work.

I'm with you James. Never bought an extended warranty for a vehicle.

When I used to buy construction equipment they were always pushing the extended warranty, anywhere from $7,500 to $15K dollars. In my mind a rubber tired end loader or similar piece of equipment should run 10K hours with out any major problems with regular maintenance. I always told the dealer that no I was not interested in the extended warranty. If their piece of equipment didn't perform I would put that extended warranty money towards the purchase of a different brand of equipment the next time.

Picked up my new Ram 1500 Limited late this afternoon. Ivory white, 5.7 Hemi, 3:21 electronic locking diff., off road package, short box with multifunction tailgate, 33 gal. fuel tank and air suspension. Put 10 miles on it coming home. Steering is very responsive and really like the ride. I figure I’ll have half of what it has on it and how to use it in say 8-9 years. That 12” touchscreen is something else.

Question???? Warranty is for 5 years or 60,000 miles power train only. Is it worth $2,000 more to expand the warranty to 10 years or 70,000 miles that covers EVERYTHING - like power train and electronics? Doesn’t cover wear items like tires, wiper blades, filters and such. My old GMC pickup I bought new in 2005 and it has 86,000 miles, so will have this one until my eyelids close for good. The electronics alone to fix one time would probably cover extra cost. I’m leaning towards purchasing it. Opinions?

$2,000.00 should not be a problem for you since you can afford a new truck in the first place. I would say get the extra warranty.

If I read correctly you're only getting an additional 10k miles on the drivetrain BUT you're going from 3yr 36k to 10yr 70k miles bumper to bumper (accessories) ,I'd say that's worth it to cover the accessories since that is what will often fail. No way anything is going wrong with drivetrain at only 70k, or at least it shouldn't, but then again it is a Dodge:dunno

$2k sounds awful cheap, the GM extended warranty for my Chevy was about $4500
when I bought my 2011 Ford Fusion the extended warranty cost me $1,700. I will NEVER do that again !! When I bought my 2015 Ford Taurus,my salesman asked me if I wanted the extended warranty , I told him DEFINITELY NOT !! Neither car has given me any problems to date. My Fusion ( Giny;s car ) has 55,000 miles in 9 years and my Taurus (22,000 miles ) in 5 years. Both these cars don;t owe me a dime !
:D
:crazy:cheers

Thought I'd post a couple of pictures of new addition. I'm going to get the warranty. First time ever done so. Feel like Dave, if the products worth anything, it shouldn't need extended warranty. But, in this case there's so much electronics and the air ride suspension to deal with. One time dealing with that 12" Uconnect system would, I think, add up quickly. Thanks everyone for your opinions. Keep them coming.

With that big video screen i see there id think dont get extended warrenty.
You'll crash it before normal warrenty is up while watching porn anyway.

Isn't funny how you cannot use your cellphone without blue tooth in your car, but they continue to put all this distraction causing information centers with more and more distractions every year. Of course everyone knows that you only use them while parked with the key off. :wtf

You don't want to own it when it is out of warranty. Check the supplemental warrantee to see how much the deductible is for a repair. I presently own 2 2016 Ford Explorers, a Limited and a Sport. The both have had mechanical problems since new. I bought the 80K / 8 year warranty, and it was about $1700 for each car. The transmission is going on the Limited, and that car has about 30K on it. I have already had engine issues with the Sport at 4000 miles, and it was fixed, but they never gave me a straight answer as to what the problem was. Took them almost a week to figure it out. I seriously doubt that either one will make it to 80K in 8 years, without needing an engine or transmission, or both. I will never own a car that doesn't have a factory warranty! When I bought Mercedes, I would find a 2 year old used one, and they came with a 3 year unlimited warranty. When the warranty was up, I would keep driving it till it hit 100K, and then get another. I loved the Mercedes, but I hated the service department. That was the first time that a Service Manager ever said to me... "You don't want to own it out of warranty", and he was 100% correct. 2 weeks out of warranty the Air Conditioning compressor failed. When I brought it in for the problem, he told me that it was bad the last time it was in for routine service. At that time it was still in warranty. Mercedes wouldn't cover the repair. He was a snake, and that was the last Mercedes that I bought at that dealership. I mention this, because the warranty is only as good as the dealer that is going to service it. You don't want to own it out of warranty.. How many times do I need to say this????? Junk

Thanks Junky. The more I thought about it, it’s the right move. Your experience speaks volumes.

Did you get the regular hemi or the new one with the electric assist? The one with electric assist would really make sense to have some additional warranty.

No, got the regular 5.7. Don’t like the idea of it starting over and over. Has to be hard on starter and everything else involved. It uses lithium batteries for this and nobody could tell me how long they last and what they cost. I’d bet hardly any gas is saved, so regular engine is good.

The new Ford 150 with the 4 cylinder diesel has the same system, where the engine shuts down at a traffic light, and then restarts when you press on the accelerator. A friends son works at a Ford dealership, and he said that they are replacing a lot of starters after 6 months.
My own knowledge of lithium car batteries comes from a friend that has them in his 40' sail boat. They last for years as long as they are not discharged by leaving lights on, or something like a constant drain, without being brought back with charging. They also have specific chargers that are made for them, but some people still use regular chargers on them, and that can do harm to the battery. They are extremely expensive, however, they don't discharge like a regular battery, and are great on things like a stand by generator, where you need dependability for the occasional starting.

Most new cars turn off when you stop and start again when you lift foot from brake pedal. They also have a switch to turn it off. The only annoying thing is you have to remember to turn it off after each time you start your truck/car. I turn mine off when in normal stop and go, I don't mind using it if I know I'll be stopped for prolong time. I wonder also what starter life expectancy is, obviously the new starters are not cheap junk like our old Chevys have

I was considering buying a Ram (weak moment in life) I liked the so called extra horsepower, I think it was rated at 45hp but didn't like the thought of added items to break down later on.
