I was driving down the road near my house one time and I swear I saw an owl fly right in front of my car. I thought naw, that couldn't be and if it was hopefully he got by OK. Almost forgot about it and when I got back, there was an owl stuck between my front bumper and grille. Weird.

Great Horned owls lay their eggs in late January or early February. Most other birds and mammals have their young later, which gives the owls a good food supply. I used to raise Canada geese in my pond and was at war protecting the young. It is illegal to kill owls as they are protected by law...;););):crazy

The lady from the DNR told me the owl probably was not hunting the dogs but that this is mating season for the great horned owl and that they become very aggressive and territorial……… I initially thought it was a red tailed hawk……Which are constantly in nearby trees and I always worried about them with the dogs

2 part story.
1: I once picked up a fresh road kill owl that was not tore up at all. I put it in the freezer. Called my uncle a few days later as I knew there was a taxidermist in his town that had done some mounts for him. Wanted to know how much to mount. The taxidermist said, DON'T EVEN bring that thing here. I tossed it in the dumpster. I later called the conservation department asking questions as I had seen mounted owls. The guy said they are real old, and it is illegal now, even if it is a road kill.
2: A couple years ago the wife & I were driving down the highway. Coming up in front of us was a dead rabbit lying in the middle of the road. Out of nowhere came a bald eagle, swooped down and grabbed the rabbit. Next thing I know it banked back around coming back across the highway. I was getting ready for it to bounce off my windshield when it let go of the rabbit and gained altitude. Made me pucker!

I knew I did not want to be in possession of a protected bird which is why I called the DNR to see if somebody wanted to come out and inspect the bird to see if it had died of a bird flu……Or if they wanted to know if they had been poisoned or what the reason for death was……..The DNR had said if they had a rash of birds deaths in the area they would inspect the bird but because they had not, they weren’t worried………
