What's on the tail shaft?

Bought this 1990 700R4 last night. It is from an unknown vehicle. I am guessing truck. What do you think the purpose of the added item on the tail is? Some sort of damper or counter balance?

I don't know what the purpose of that piece but that trans is the twin to the one we are putting in my son's 61 B/A bubble. It came out of a Chevy/GMC Astro van. I picked it up from our local JUNK ( OOOPS !!) recyleing yard.for $200.00
