HAVE 1962 IMPALA SS 409 DQ.
HARD SATRT COLD, AND WONT IDLE BELOW 1050 RPM.
RUNS GOOD OFF IDLE, NO HESITATION AND GOOD POWER.
CARBS WERE REBUILT INCLUDING REBUSHED THROTTLE SHAFTS.
8 DEGREES PLAY IN TIMING CHAIN.
NOT SURE IF BASE PLATE GASKETS ARE CORRECT.BOTTOM GASKET IS PAPER, THEN HAS 3/4 INCH SPACER PLATE THEN TOP GASKET W/ HEAT RISER PASSAGE.
CAR WILL IDLE WARM BUT SLOWLY STARTS TO STALL AFTER A FEW MINUTES.
IS THE REAR CARB THE PRIMARY?
ARE THE MIXTURE SCREWS IN THE PRIMARY CARB?

Jim, were the carbs just rebuilt recently? Was the problem there before the rebuild? No offense, but it wouldnt be the first time a carb was put on without the 1/4 pipe fitting plugged in the rear base of the carb, or carbs. The symptom you discribe sounds like a needle and seat sticking causing a mild flooding after engine has run awhile. Rev it up and it smooths out. Suggest you pull the tops off and check float levels and clean needle seats. We would need more information on when this condition started and more history on your motor. Have you got many miles on motor and then decided to re-build carbs? Is this a new, first time out motor? Need more info.

Also what carbs? If they are not the stock carbs and are Edelbrocks then you will need to put a carb plate between the manifold and carbs.

Sounds like a vacc leak, or carbs are way out of adjustment, or,,,, more info please,,,dq
