Old Cowboys

I've been watching quite a few westerns lately. One thing I noticed is that all the wagons, stage coach's etc all have larger diameter rear wheels then the front. Every single one. So I'm wondering what the reason may be? Since lots fo you all are old cowboys does anyone know why they were built that way? I have a theory but I'll wait to hear what others say

1. More miles per bale going downhill maybe?

2. Easier driver entry.

3. The front wheels have to be small enough to clear the body when turning.

The smaller wheels help with the steering angles. They let wheels turn more.

Smaller wheels for turning clearance against body as mentioned and it was a straight axle pivoting in the middle. Also made them feel like they had a gasser,especially when the horses farted.

Ease of turning may be a reason.
Also maybe they figured more load carrying in the back with the larger wheels
These wagons used a lever-friction type brake (wood on wood) on the rear wheel, maybe better braking

Yes, but it was crude I'm sure the brakes needed all the help they could get

The real reason for the smaller wheels is a better 60' time....

Only took a couple to cipher that out....
