How to hop up a 409 truck engine

Great Stuff!!!! This is a wonderful set of posts. Guys like me need the experience of the real bullet boys to keep from making expensive mistakes. I wish I had read these posts in 1990. My engine is a 0.120" over 409 in a truck block with ported 333 heads containing 2.20" intakes and 1.72...

    Piston Speed

Excellent Idea I'll grab a set of those puppies and snatch the rods and pistons out of the block and replace the rods and save myself a lot of grief. Thanks, Jim

    Is this cylinder gonna fly?

Piston/Valves Clearances Out of curiosity, what piston/valve clearances do you guys run? I just had to cut my heads another 0.010", and I was at 0.143" intake and 0.115" exhaust before this cut and I am running 2.188" intakes and 1.72" exhausts with a 0.036" (CH) Felpro headgasket...

    Piston Speed

Well..... My cam choice has a "best" operating range at the higher RPM's, and 409 rods were famous for letting go at high rpm. Any additional reciprocating weight will only impart greater forces on the old rods. ARP rod bolts are a nice addition, but the old rods parted in the middle. I...

    Piston Speed

4000? That weight is with wrist pins. Did you mean to say "wouldn't" instead of "would"? I was thinking 6000 rpm. I may have to pull the pistons to re-cut valve clearance, and if I do, I will definitely lighten the pistons and rebalance. Those Ross pistons are beautiful, but they are...

    409 Corvette

Exhaust Maybe I can address all comments at once. First, the Vette is sans engine and trans at this point. Both are on stands at the moment. I am redoing the fiberglass and interior that suffered from 18 years of being parked behind the barn. I am doing vinyl repair myself, trying to...

    Piston Speed

My 409 uses stock shot peened 409 rods (rebuilt), and 1035 gm piston (Ross high silicon forged pistons). Can anyone give me the limiting piston speed for this combination? If I had it to do over again, I would use a 454 crank and BB rods (or eagles). Hindsight is marvelous. Jim

    409 Corvette

I decided to resurrect a 1992 project interrupted by marriage. I am installing a 409 (424 ci) into a 1968 vette convertible I have had for many years. It will be mated to a M22 Muncie with 11" clutch in an explosion proof bellhousing (due to an incident many years ago). I started this project...
