    Rear main seal leak??

Ok, I replaced the rear main seal by removing the rear main cap and then rotating it out of the groove, then put in the side tabs that were missing, causing the leak. Back together and no leaks!!! Lesson learned. Stan

Ah hah! after reading this thread, I now know I didnt put the side tabs in the rear main seal. I guess I'll be taking the pan back off to fix the leak. Stan

I don't have a clue what it's going in yet. You see, I do things ass backwards. I'll put it on the run stand for a while until I find something suitable to put it in. Stan

What Edelbrock carb do I want for my newly rebuilt 1958 348? Its stock 9.5 compression with a 340 horse 409 cam and stock heads and intake. I'm thinking a 500 cfm but have read bad reviews on the avs2. Any suggestions? Stan

Bungy, After looking more closely (with my glasses on) You are right. The block casting number is C1158, which now makes sense Stan

    348 head/block compatibility

The TSB solved my dilemma-THANKS!!! I got my engine back from the Machine shop and its going back together with the original block and heads without the newer spark plug water cooling holes. I went with stock 9.5 pistons and a 340 hp 409 Isky cam from Show Cars. I will use the stock intake...

    348 oil slinger and spacer

ok, got my 58 348 back from the machine shop and am putting it back together. all is well so far but I notice in the exploded diagram of the engine, there is a spacer on the crank between the oil slinger and the harmonic balancer. however there was no such part removed during disassembly, or...

    348 head/block compatibility

You are correct-the last photo is a later 409 head with the factory cooling holes. At this point the block cleaned up well and if the heads are usable as well, then I intend to use them as is. They ran for fifty years that way so I’m gonna run em that way again.

    348 head/block compatibility

Ok, here is what I have found. Contrary to what I have read, my late 1958 block (1872 casting) does not have cooling holes around the spark plug as you can see in the photo of the clean block. Neither do the heads (casting 2791) as seen in the photos of the dirty heads that came off the 1872...

    348 head/block compatibility

You are right it’s time to get things straight. I will send pics when I get the block back from the machine shop. By the way, it’s a late (November) block but has no cooling ports. As for performance, I’m happy with 300 hp for street only.
