068 Questions

I have posted this as a short block several months ago with questions about the pistons. Decided to strip it down to the bare block along with another early cast date 068 block today. I'm getting them prepped for sale on our site, but have questions about the date of June 8, 1961. I have posted images of the block stamp as well as the casting date. Block appears to be standard bore. Questions: When did the 068 block replace the 623 block? Any chance this could have been one of the late produced runs of the 142 1961 409's? Likely not the case. When did the 1962 model year 409 hit the showroom? Pistons are GM that have been modified for ......?? Flame travel?? Any old school speculation. Crank is mint. Where are you Pat & Cecil??IMG_6059 (1).jpegIMG_6067.jpegIMG_6070.jpegIMG_6069.jpegIMG_6058.jpegIMG_6060.jpegIMG_6061.jpeg

Also, we have an idea of how many cars sold and about when they were made. Who has the production numbers/dates of the engines, Pat maybe? Could this be early 62' run or possibly late 61' replacement blocks? Not sure how they would have handled the transition with replacement blocks for the 409's in 61' being such a new option.

I know of an "068" casting that was dated "E 24 61". That's pretty dang early :).

If i remember correctly it had a very bizarre stamping, not what one would expect (not QA or QB).

I have this 409 crank in the 348 stroker. I wonder if it is a 61? I never found a complete number. The last 3 digits of a 61 are 072.

if the stamping # plays out by my research is T1107QB translates to Tonawanda Nov 07 QB would be 1962 since the block was cast in June of 61
IMO but hopefully someone will help out

My opinion is since your block has a sequence number it really didn’t have any connection to a 623 1961 block. Here is the stamp pad of my 1961 SS 409 and no sequence number
