1961 Chevrolet Parkwood "OLD GOLD" 108k original miles

I was in the market for Wagon a few months back looking for either a 61 or 62. The first deal went sour where I got beat to the punch on a 62 Impala Wagon out in Colorado. Then I called a buddy of mine in Texas and told him about what happened and he referred me to call a gentleman and his son that he met at a local swap meet from Texas who had possession of a rare 1961 Parkwood that is all original and super rock solid with factory a/c, power steering, power brakes, power back glass, 6 passenger, 283/2spd, sporting all original fawn paint (patina), virtually complete.

After speaking with the owner and coming to an agreement on the price, the deal was done. However, family health issues suddenly came into play for the owner of the Wagon and our deal was tabled for quite sometime. The owner did his best to keep in touch with me during the course of unfortunate times for his family which resulted in the loss of his son, who was a custom car builder himself, a fan of Wagons.

I want to dedicate this build to Jay Rattan, may you forever rest in peace.

My plans are to get the Parkwood mechanically sound (yank out the old 283/2spd in one-shot), redo all the brakes, drop in the freshly done up 283, 2 speed powerglide or TH350, new wiring harnesses, air ride suspension, new bushings, balljoints, brakes, tie rods, pitman, power steering slave, hoses, etc. I will attempt to preserve the priceless patina with the help of a good friend by laying down 3 to 4 coats of urethane clear once the metal is the paint is prepped.

My plans are to roll the Wagon on Firestone bias ply tires (7.50-14) with correct stock Wagon 14x6 wheels and dog dish caps or possibly a large street rod aluminum wheel. Lastly, get the interior completely redone with a Cars1 fawn Parkwood interior kit and perhaps add a 9 pass seat.

Here's my 1961 283 that has been completely gone through, refinished in Olds J2 Gold, Power Pack heads, Mild cam, Pete jackson gear drive (Poor Man's Blower), Sanderson headers, Alan Grove componet brackets, RB Hi-Torq mini-starter, Edelbrock accy's and 500cfm 4bbl carburetor, MSD ready to run HEI distributor, 8.5mm MSD SF wires, Bosch Platinum .035 gap plugs, dual Smithy's 30" glasspacks to ensure this Wagon is running nicely.

I managed to swap out the front passenger door with the crease by replacing it with one that was provided by the previous owner. The patina is a perfect match. Also, took off the driver's side moulding and installed its replacement.

I transferred the lock cylinder, window regulator and glass from the old door to the replacement. Beneath all the filth is original EZ-EYE green tinted glass.

A few shots of under the hood... Almost time to hoist the old 283 out..

Nothing like seeing an untouched 61 A/C setup..

I found this Harrison ID tag behind the hood hinge support bracket just laying there. I'll have to put some adhesive on it to put it back in place. :0

This is about the coolest piece of originality that I've found on Old Gold. Assembly line writing "863" which was most likely done for assembly workers to know this was a Parkwood series vehicle being built prior to the delivery of the cowl tag. 863 = Bel Air/Parkwood

Progress went very well on this day. I managed to remove the driveshaft, remove the transmission and 283 sucessfully as well. The 283 had about 4 quarts still in the pan and fully loaded transmission. :)

Just before removing the driveshaft, I found this little hidden treasure inside the frame tunnel... At first, I thought it was chupacabra, but looks to be just a cat skull

A quick mock up before I paint it in gold metallic enamel. :cheesy:

Reinstalled the hood and replaced the passenger side headlight bezel that was hit significantly for a better one.

Made a few phone calls yesterday to get a few necessities. I ordered my new Windshield in "Green" from Auto City Classic, new energy suspension motor mounts, transmission mounts, all new M&H wiring harnesses, and lastly had to order some new pans and windshield seal from Chevrolet Restoration World.

Didn't have much time to work on Old Gold last night, but I ended up removing the old 283 grille emblem for a much cleaner piece. Also managed to install my bumper steps on the rear. :crazy

Hey Seth, I PM'd you re: the side mirror you are looking for in the wanted section, then I read this thread. The mirror I have I believe is OEM. The part # on the inside is 3821956. I took it off my 62 bel air wagon. I would like to donate it to your dedicated project. A small giving on my part to help you complete this project on behalf of Jay Ratten and his family. I'm sure they will appreciate your efforts. I will follow this thread with interest and will help where I can.

Cool car! The wagons have grown on me over the years. Good luck. Also, I think you sold me a front bumper for my 61 a couple years ago (from LiL). It's yet to make it ON the car but we're getting closer!

Rick, I appreciate your help. However, I acquired one just yesterday! Thank you very much.

I'll admit this wagon has to be one the best rides I've ever owned. The originality of this car is truly amazing. It was last registered in 1973 and the mileage on the odometer just about corresponds to the registration. No evidence anywhere on this car of half *** work done, its just a complete original jewel that has been stowed away for many years. Very proud to be the owner. :)

As far as the bumper goes, hmmmm I don't recall selling any bumpers?

Yup, I just checked. 2006! Rear center section. I'll be following this build as well. I've always been a little jealous of your builds. Inspiring for sure.
