what trans options were available on 425hp models? was it a 4 speed only deal when you got the big motor?

Yep!!! Close ratio with 4:11 and 4-56 and wide ratio with all 3-series gears.

Yes!!!! Close ratio with 4-series and wide ratio with 3-series unless you wanted something different.

Just wondering , was a three speed available for the 425 motor?.

The standard transmission for the 425 hp engine was a 3 speed with 3:36 axle. 4 speed was optional.

I had always wondered at that, didn;t think a saginaw 3 speed would cut it behind a 409. What ford 3 speed was used, do you know? thank you for any input.

I started a thread on this, learned the Borg Warner T85 was probably the 3 speed behind a 409. Used in 442 and GTO and heavy duty Ford applications also. The people on this site are an amazing wealth of information.
