I live in Louisiana. Purchased a 1980 GMC single cab, long bed dually from a salvage yard with a 409. Didn't know much about the engine at that time but very quickly obvious the motor was put in from an older Chevy model. Also a Turbo 400 transmission tagged 1977. Trying to learn more about the engine and year. Can't make out the numbers on back of block as I only viewed thru a mirror. I did ID the first several digits though. The motor/truck hadn't run for 11 years but was able to get it going but running rough with Edelbrock that came on it though I rebuilt it. Continuing to work on the truck and as we progress with success I put a little more $ into it. Radiator is next. Looks like this site will be very helpful and look forward to carrying on research through it.

Welcome. See if you can read any numbers from the front stamping pad. It's just under the passenger side head on the front. If it's there, see what the suffix code is and post here or check our chart: https://www.348-409.com/suffix.html

Can you get a cell phone back there to take a picture of the block numbers then zoom in?
Unusual but great find!! Even if its just a truck motor thats still good! It’s in a truck! Got a dump truck motor in my race car!
