235 Six Trouble-Help

My dad needs help with his 235 six. Car starts and idles well but when he gives it gas it backfires and runs rough. He adjusted timing but now idles rough but then smooths out when you give it gas. He pulled the front cover to see if timing could be off but timing marks are aligned. Any ideas on what to try next?

Check your points,and the ground wire inside the dist.

Points, coil, wires, give your ignition a once over. How about the carb? Did this happen all of a sudden, after some repairs, after sitting a while? The more info we get the better.

Yes,235's use a gear drtve.They don't jump,they strip out..........no fun!!!!!!

If it backfires out the carb I would be looking at it. Maybe the accelerator pump or the carb base to body is loose.
If it backfires out the tail pipe I would be looking at the ignition system.

Check the mechanical advance in the distributor. Make sure the weights swing out smoothly.
