It threads into the front carburetor on a dual carb setup. the fuel pump line screws into the (IN) on the fuel filter. (out) to the tee.

I found this vintage picture of a 62 eng. Do I need a threaded pipe between the filter and T fitting instead of the nipple?

Judging by that pic I would say yes. I think I would look for more "vintage" pics and make a judgment call from there.
Don't know if you have the "factory" 1/8" iron street tee like original. They can be elusive and $$$. 50 years or so ago they were probably at every hardware store, now all you can find is brass. You can find 1/4" & up, but 1/8" seems to be nonexistent.

Jeff,
I've got the cast iron T. The first picture is of my parts. I've been searching for a vintage picture of a 63 425 engine for a while. Even a picture of an unrestored engine would be great.

Back when I was building the 62, I wanted nothing but date code parts, once I realized no one cared but a hand full of 409 folks.

I just like any 409 and sold my stash of those little fittings for $100 plus each, there probably more today.
