i,ve read most every thread about upgrading my diff (stock posi ) and to be honest my head is kind of spinning ,first off my last option is to do any fabricating ,my sbc 385 stroker (brand new) should be making 400 hp and it's mated to a muncie stick,is there any to make it last by doing some upgrades ? or will those 17 splines be twisted up in a heartbeat ,never mind the rest of the diff grenading, i don't have any plans to be drag racing it maybe burn a little rubber on the street,i'd love to be able to just bolt something in it ,iknow it won't be cheap ..thanks skaz

I was going to say the same thing. Street tires, you should be ok. Stay away from slicks, you will twist a U joint or axle. Cap girdles for the rear end would help. Look online at bruneau performance

With the torque that a 383 small block will make, the above mentioned cap straps and aftermarket axles if it's anywhere near slicks.

I have stock rear ends in my street driven 62's. I have one 327/300HP 4speed 62 Hardtop, one 62 SS Hardtop 409 - 500 HP & 4 speed with stock rear end with dual upper control arms(in fact all my 62's have dual upper control arms), girdles on my posi's from Aubrey B. , and I do not run slicks. I have not replaced the axles but I have plenty of used originals _I will replace the axles if I have problems. I also have billet carrier bearing on stock driveshafts. I also just finished a 450 HP 62 SS 409 convertible with a Richmond 5 speed, dual upper control arms and girdles on the posi rear end, and the billet carrier bearing on a stock driveshaft.
I can smoke the radials on the 500 HP 409 4 speed Hardtop and I do :burnout -I have 2500 miles on it since it was built....no rear end problems.

I considered 9 inch Ford and Mosher rear ends but the cost is easily over $3000 to do it correctly (not doing it myself), so I did not spend those $ and did the improvements noted above since I am not drag racing normally. I have drag raced the 500 HP 409 but I drive it to not break rear ends--for example I do not side step the clutch or drop the clutch pedal - I do it how I drag raced years ago and did not break rear ends.

I am considering doing a drag racing car :fear2 :hide - If I can build one, the rear end will be a 9" ford or Mosher rear end with dual upper control arms and

I beat the crap out of my 409/340hp. Never broke anything but my tires didn't hook much. 4sp stock drive train.
I beat my 340/ 4 spd pretty hard and the M/T slicks hook really good on a prepped track. The kind of track that almost pull your tennis shoes off. It is a high 13, low 14 second car. Stock axles broke easy, so after I ran out of lefts, I bought aftermarket Dutchman axles. Dutchman's that were 20% stronger than stock never broke, but I did have to replace the left one 2 years ago. I got a twisty in it.

While it's apart, change the spider gears to a 30 spline conversion kit.Atermarket 30 spline axles won't cost much if any more than a 17 spline axle will.

That is what Dutchman recommended when I replaced the left. But I figured I won't be racing it much longer, so just replaced with another 17 spline .
I have not been able to locate cap girdles.

I saw a listing in my Show Cars catalog for that conversion kit,a little over 200 if I remember right a while back.Id suggest calling them.Yes,the posi units for the Dana 44,the Chrysler 8 3/4,and the early Chevy 8.2's are Eaton units. The Dana 44,and the Suregrip both used 30 spline axles.

Another down side on the factory gears is the only 17 spline pinion gear. Not sure of an aftermarket posi will take the Dana side gears.
