63 Impala - brake issues

Greetings all,

Been a “minute” since I’ve posted but wanted to ask the Forum.

Went for a ride yesterday & zero issues. Went to leave for Cars & Coffee this AM and noticed brakes are grabbing intermittently. In backing out of the driveway, car suddenly stops, then releases, then stops again. Can’t imagine this happening at speed.

I have disc brakes on the front (14”) & drum (14”) on the back.

Any ideas on determining whether it’s the front or back? Maybe I jack up the car & see which wheel(s) are grabbing?

Eric

Did you have emergency brake on when parked in garage ,if so maybe they did not release all the way when started backing. If not used a lot cables can get rusty and hang up a little.

I’ll jack the car up & check the situation in the rear tires.

I do not use the E brake as a general rule in the garage.

Appreciate the suggestions.

Update on this as I jacked up rear end :

Left rear tire will NOT turn. Right rear turns.

Could this mean my E brake is hung up on the left side or an issue with the axle/bearing/rear end?

What’s the remedy?

Might even need that drum turned if it's out of round.

Another possibility is if rear brakes were put on at one time is the self adjuster's got swithed from side to side there is a left and right and driving and backing ( is how they adjust) one side tightened and other side loosened. That should be checked along with e brake cable not releasing.

Quick update:

Had rear end on jack stands & removed rear drum of driver‘s side. Drum came off without a lot of fanfare, so I’m guessing it’s NOT the E-brake hanging up.

Right tire turns, but other wheel will not move. Something has got it “hung up”

Axle bearing bad or perhaps something in the differential?

What‘s a good torque for the lug nuts? Couldn’t find it in the shop manual?

Test drive again take note when driving straight . Is it gone??? Make sharp turns see of it come's back on turns. Possible spider gear issue or if you have positraction friction clutch chatter.

it’s almost like the wheel is locked up. There’s no skid mark, but something is definitely bound up on that axle or that side of the axle.

As already said. Could be brake drum out of round, Machine work may cure problem.

You do have it out of gear on standard tranny or out of park on automatic ??
Car was in neutral while on the jack stands.

I’m able to manually turn the passenger rear wheel.

Driver‘s side wheel (with tire & drum removed) essentially won’t budge.
