does anyone readjust their hydraulic roller lifters after winter storage?

My father never owned a hydraulic lifter equipped vehicle until he bought a new 1966 Ford Custom 500 with a 289/Cruiseomatic in 1966. He insisted he do tune-ups every 5000 miles and my 14 year old argument to omit lashing the valves was ignored. At about 35000 miles we (meaning me) had to do a complete valve job. Coincidence?
