There are two types of bellhousing used from '55 to '82, cast iron and aluminum.

Casting No./Date Code
Cast iron housings follow engine code patterns:

B197
B = Feb./Month
19 = 19th day casting
7 = '57/Yr.

Some castings omit the year and some have no cast date code.

Aluminum housings follow aluminum Muncie M/T case coding:

Two 1/2" diameter circles divided in half. The Status Marker circle carries the latest blueprint change nunber on the top half and the Deviation Notice Letter if active, on the bottom (often both left balnk). The Date Marker circle carries the month (numeric) on top and the week (dots) on bottom (date should precede final assembly stamp).

For 63, the 3779553 aluminum bellhousing is correct and expensive. You can also use the 3779552 bellhousing which is identical except it is cast iron and cheaper.
For 64, the correct bellhousing is the 3842942 aluminum, but is hard to find.
You can use any chevy v-8 bellhousing as long as it allows the correct starter and clutch arm mounting and is matched to whichever flywheel,(153 tooth or 168 tooth), and clutch you are using.
