A young sharp tongued cowboy, who always had something smart to say to all the other ranch hands but kept his job because he could out work just about anybody drove into town and headed for his favorite cafe. There he sat down next to an old cowboy he knew well from the rodeo circuit a couple years earlier. The old cowboy was just sitting there staring at a steaming bowl of chili, so the young cowboy blurted out in a voice that just about everyone in the cafe could hear, you going to eat that chili you old coot or just stare at it all day. The old cowboy just sat there silent for a few seconds thinking to himself, how he used to be a smartmouthed kid himself once but lessons in life slowed him down, then he softly said, just looking at it right now. The young cowboy slide the bowl of chili over to his side of the counter and started to spoon it in until he got near the bottom. That's when he saw a small dead mouse in the chilibowl which stopped him in his tracks, the shock of seeing this dead mouse in the chili just inches from his face made him up chuck the chili back into the bowl. Then the old cowboy said in a soft voice, that's about as far as I got there pardner.
