date code on 461 heads

I inherit a set of 461 heads they are only 1.94" intake but thats fine...the dates are J283 and J293....Is the "I" skipped or not...so is the "J" for 1963 or 1964 production? In other words is the "J" Sept or Oct and if Oct perhaps they would be for 1964??

I would think definitely 64 model year, for a 64 model year car to be delivered to a showroom in Sept.63 for the new model year introduction it would have been built in August 63 with engine casting dates predating that.That is unless there were something that delayed the new model introduction such as a strike,was that the case for the 64 model year?

I have a set of 461's some guy raced with I was going to strap to my 400ci small block.
Are your 461's X's?461's are basically cast iron copies of the 1960 aluminum fuelie heads which supposedly also had a 461 casting number,the X versions supposedly had ports with larger internal volumes making them the preferred casting for class racers according to magazine articles back in the day.

Yes they do, I wish they would have cast them with the double humps though :D. Just for the nostalgia.
I have had 291 292 461x 461 and 462s. I had a complete 63 fuelie out of a vette in a 61 once. Lots of work done from top to bottom changed to carb, 13 1/2 TRWs. It was awesome ran cheaters on it and when everything came together it would pull one wheel of the ground. Then the next time I tried I would break something, dumb kid!

They're making the aluminum ones with the double hump casting

I have a single 461 X head if anybody wants it. It can't be worth more than $100 plus shipping. Maybe it would help someone.
The date code is G 11 1. I think that would be July 11, 1961. 327 engine production was under way for the 1962 cars by then. It's a bare head, needs a good cleaning, but it looks like a good core.

Yes the Vortecs are pretty distinctive in an open engine compartment you can see them a mile away.

Were these 1964 year -461 heads with only 1.94 Intake valves used on 327 300HP engines? Because all the articles i read list the 327 275HP engine from 1966-68 and possibly 1965 Chevy II....I assumed the 1.94 valve size was only on the 275HP engines and not on the 300HP engines.

461X heads have 172/64 cc runners and 461 have 165/65 runners according to the NHRA stock class sets. The 461X heads were used on 327 with 300-340 and 365hp with 1.94-1.50 valves, as X heads never had 2.02/1.60 stock. The 2.02-1.60 versions were the 165/65 setup. The X heads have 62.076cc chambers and the regular 461 are listed as 64cc. Some info lists them both as the same. But the X heads untouched have a quench pad that made the difference.
