I currently have two sets of 690 heads but I used to own a 3rd set for which I have data.

690 J2561 pinned
690 J2561 pinned
690 L1861 originally pinned, now has 7/16 screw-in studs
690 A2662 originally pinned, now has 7/16 screw-in studs
690 B1562 pinned (sold several years ago)
690 L1961 pinned (sold several years ago)

I hope this helps.

early 690s

Eric:

Those J 25 61s are pretty early castings, can't remember if we've seen any before that. Would go great with my March 24 1961 "068" block :).

Thanks!

Tom, here's a couple of previous posts. I don't have them anymore, they were sold to another member.

Here's an interesting one...... There is a set of 690's on Ebay that are K 25 61 and K 27 61 that are pinned. 409 Chevy Performance has K 25 61 that are not pinned. Maybe they started putting the pins in after lunch on Nov 25/61

Tom,
I'm a little(?) slow. I was reading some old posts.
I have a set of 690 heads K 6 61 that are not pinned & have screw in studs. Didn't check the pushrod size. I can send a pic if you'd like.
No, there is NO evidence of them having ever been pinned.
I had asked both Tony & Donnie Shaffer about them several years ago & surprisingly enough, Donnie had no comment(about the heads anyway....)

Gordon:

Thanks for the updated info. I suspect Donnie and Tony are more interested in the performance aspects of these heads as opposed to these sorts of details :).

I sort of dropped the ball on recording all these a few years back....

Best,
Tom

Tom, one thing I should add here if you think it applicable. I had a broken stud in my 409 (690 heads listed earlier)and when we Rockwell tested the original pinned stud that broke it was 40Rc which is VERY hard and brittle. I suspect the reason it broke was a combination of roller rocker/cam geometry and the high spring pressure resulting from the roller cam. I do not think I would trust the original pinned studs in any roller cam setup as all of them we took out when we changed to screw in studs were 38-40Rc and would potentially be suspect for failure.

I know this is an old thread but i have the valve covers off this engine and thought i would add that the 690,s are date coded A 4 62 and A 19 62 this is on a 068 block dated A 24 62 with no stamping on the front pad.

I've got a pair of 690's

Both dated : 119 (April 29, 1962 ???)

Both pinned, but will have 7/16" screw-in studs soon.

I was told these are 1962 model heads. Is there any way to know when they have this style date code instead of the alpha numeric one?

I'm thinking[maybe not the best idea :laugh] that the 583's were introduced with the 63 model cars which came on the scene in Sept. of 62.The heads would have been cast before that time by a month or so.With your heads having been dated in April of 62,they would have indeed been 62 model year heads. What I dont know, and maybe Cecil can shead some light on this ,is wheather the 583 was a first part,or mid year release.

In the book Chevrolet by the # ers, author Alan Colvin he does not list the 583 head anywhere........and it's titled 60-64.your thinkings usually pretty sound I believe Don.

Correction,he does mention the 583 in a highlight that the "583 head was introduced Nov. 12 1963 and was used thru 1965".I believe August is the new model year, correct???
