I believe Samuel B was lost during the Battle of Luzon Straight....been awhile since i read about it. It is a very interesting battle.
BTW I met a gentleman who was survivor of USS Indianapolis a few months ago. Talked with him and his buddy a Korean War Artillery Gunner.
I'm from Iowa and not a big fan of them creating another USS IOWA in the from of a sub now. Name the thing after some military kid that gave his life protecting others instead of our state. We have our huge battle ship already with a storied history. Some poor kid somewhere at some point gave his life for us and all we can do is name another ship the same thing we have already named one once before. The Sammy B,Hoel, Heermann, and Johnston were all shining examples of the very best in Navy tradition. In my opinion there should always be ships with their names in commission to perpetuate their names.
Battleships were named after states. Aircraft Carriers after important people or events. Cruisers after Revolutionary Battles. Destroyers and Frigates after heros. There are more type ships LPH, LHA, etc but you get the idea. Because no more Battleships were to be built they name Subs after states.I'm from Iowa and not a big fan of them creating another USS IOWA in the from of a sub now.
