Dyno Don's '62 Belair

I hope it isn't a problem starting a thread about Dyno's '62 Belair here. I know technically it wasn't a '63 Z-11 but I'm sure it ended up with many Z-11 parts. If it is a problem I can move it.

The basis for this thread is all of the different versions of Dyno's '62 Belair. I'm not sure if there are many race cars that ended up being lettered in so many variations as this car. It is a shame it appears that it is gone to the racetrack in the sky because it was truly a historical car.

I've attached several photos of different versions of this car. If anyone has anymore photos of it please post them. Does anyone know when it finally left the Nicholson stable and what it all time low ET was? I think Schartman drove it well into 1964 and maybe in to early 1965?

Wow, are you the current caretaker?

Is it possible that this vehicle was once in a small town in Missouri (Salem)?

Yes, It is part of a large private collection I am in charge of in Southern California. They have owned it about 19 years now. It was being raced in Nostalgia Super Stock for a number of years and I have been returning it back to the way it was raced in the 60's (It has Weld Aluminum wheels, a fiberglass hood, Nitrous, vinyl lettering etc.) I put the 14" Steel wheels and period tires back on, the steel hood, had it hand lettered back to 62 livery etc. Runs strong, closer to 600 HP now and is pretty fun to drive - in a straight line LOL I'm not sure where all it's lived in the past, but I was told it was in the Mid West somewhere in the early 2000's - trying to run down more history.

Circa 2006-7-8 (I'll have to look at the sticker on the car we took) we were attending a weekend event at KCIR in Western Missouri. There was a guy there with what he represented as the '62 Belair you caretake. I think it had a BBC under the hood. I recall getting his business card and that he was from Salem MO. I recall there was some scuffle over ownership and there were some legal issues associated with the vehicle?

I bet I still have that business card somewhere :). He had an interesting first name, something like "Leland". I'll look about if you're interested.

James might remember that event, and I think TomO was there as well. We towed James' Mopar and I drove out in the 62 Belair sedan, which is one of the cars in my avatar :).

Cheers! TomK

That's a different car. Don built a new car in the 1988 that was basically a "Tribute" to the original car. It was basically a Pro Mod car with a 632" motor that Don and Dick Estevez built.
.. There is a lot of controversy about that car and the ownership, to the point the Don's daughter Cindy has retained lawyers to try and return the car and I'm not sure where that stands at this point in time. This is a picture of that car

Thought so. I understand that there might have been more than one iteration. Your pic is definitely the one we saw back then at KCIR :).
when he first built it, it had a 434" W motor. Then a 500" Oldsmobile Pro Stock motor, that motor pitched out a couple of Rods so he borrowed a Pro Stick motor from Butch Leal, before building the 632" BBC.

I am almost sure I saw this 62 at Super Chevy Sunday at Bradimere in Denver, Colorado and I saw Don at the event with the 62 in late 1980’s or early 1990’s?
