In 1982 I found a COMPLETE 400HP 409, without air cleaner.....complete with idler pulley, 925/926 exhaust manifolds, etc.......the seller was wanting $200 for it....I offered $175 and he sold it to someone else for $200!!!!!!!!

Funny stories about the things we missed. We broke tons of parts too.
Back in late 70s I bought a pair of 690 heads, dual pt dist, chrome valve covers, and solid 425 cam for 40 bucks. Easy come, easy go.....

I guess my missed opportunity was 1978, about 6 months before I built my shop, I tried to buy a damaged Z-11 engine from a guy in the South Bend , In. area. It was missing one piston and rod, carbs, and distributor, and had a hole out the oil pan where the rod exited. He was asking $600, I offered him $450. He said no. I let this deal get away because I didn't have the money, and I didn't have the space to store it, as I was racing, and working out of a 11 x 26ft. garage at that time. I've regretted not borrowing the extra $150, and bringing that engine home ever since..........even to this day I'm still pissed I let it slip away.

That pesky money thing was always a problem back then. That $150 you spoke about Dave, was hard to come by.
