OK, we've been hearing about all the 409 running down the 1/4, anybody take their 348 down the track lately, especially all those strokers that were being built last year. My motors done, and someday I'll get it in the car and find out for myself. But in the meantme someone must be playing with a Lil' 348.

I guess I could really ruffle some feathers here by referring to it as a 409. Do the Math 348 bored 40 over with a 427 crank rounds out to 409 cu in. I'm a believer in run what ya brung, and plan on having plenty of fun with this car on and off the track. If your afraid to pull up next to it, keep it on the trailer. After all a 409 is nothing more than a 348 on Viagra, and this guy doesn't need that lil blue pill.:stooges

something makes me think we've done this before.........but since it's fun, and your 348 should really haul butt, we'll do it again.

348 bore : 4.125 + .040 = 4.165

4.165 x 4.165 x 3.760 x 6.2832 = 409.825

sounds like a 409 to me :brow

Damn: Bob's math is correct again. So Ray.......I assume you're gonna list his car at Norwalk as a 409. If you do can you please footnote ie. was a 348:roll

p.s. I would like to see what one of them would do with new alum. heads & intake.

Listen if your daddy didn't do what he did many years ago you wouldn't be here. And if the 348 hadn't wiped the floor up with Ford and Chrysler in 58 thru 61 you 409's would be still born. So be nice to your daddy and show a little respect for who gave you life. I will say that we had just as much fun if not more with the 348 as they ever had with the 409. The factories hadn't entered the racing then so we all drove our 348's to work and raced on week-ends. They quit doing that in 62. I have not raced my 58 this year but I want a new engine with more compression and bigger cam then this 348 is going to haul a**.:D Roy

Sounds like a challenge!

We've seen or heard of a few pretty slick "older brother" 348s being built lately, and now the pot has been stirred. Somebody needs to build a kick butt 348 and get some times down. Let's all get together and sponsor Roy so he can break some records and get that 60s feeling back :).

Let's see: 348 block, 409 crank, BBC rods, stroker pistons on the bottom end. What to put up top? BWR heads would be cool! Need a sheet metal intake. Multiple carbs, of course (maybe FI?). Then stick it in a 2 ton Chevy and have a blast!

This looks so easy on paper, it makes me want to build a 348. Hmmm, let's see. There's that "962" replacement block bored just under .030" waiting to be finished, just lying down the basement. Got the 409 crank. Several choices in iron heads, including a matched set of bare 690s that once sat atop a racer 348. Single 4 barrel aluminum intake just gathering dust. Radical cam with solid lifters and roller rockers in the box. Looks like I need con rods, pistons, valves, push rods and a set of pulleys, bearings and gaskets to make it work. But what to put it in?

Thanks for providing some food for thought!

Cheers,
TomK

Tom I talked to Indy Head service about the heads and they are really nice people and I'm going that way in July so I'm dropping them off. Thanks again Tom. I'm slowly getting things together and I'm going with 3X2 intake, home built or factory. I'm going with 11 to one compression or if E 85 becomes more available I might go with 13 or 14 to one. Any way I hope to have 58 that runs with some of the 409's by next year. Oh and I'm going to have Aubrey brew me up some wild cam that will have square lobes.:D Roy

Hey tom...... I have a car you can put it in.:brow I have always wanted to build a 348. They have always had my intrest. This sounds odd, but with the smaller cid. It would be much easier to turbo charge. 2 things that probably wouldnt look natural together, But There is some pretty inexpensive turbos out there that would work great for a engine of that size. Could make some good power with low compression and streetability. The first turbo system I had in my car was alot of fun. Get next some young kids and let the blow off valve go whoooosh. The look on their faces was priceless. Their jaws would hit the pavement. That old car didnt just do that..... did it? All thats lacking is a single plane intake. Really need one to make it work.
