To start the tear down I remove the tail housing by removing the speedometer driven gear and holder then the housing.
Next I use this puller to remove the the speedometer drive gear then move to the governor.
The E clip must be removed to get the pin out that runs through a hole in the output shaft.

Once this pin is removed you have to remover this set bolt then the governor housing can be removed.

Next I flip it over and remove the pan then the filter so I can remove the valve body.
I have marked the bolt with a black mark that hold the valve body to the case.

Now is a good time to check end play by getting a screw driver under the forward drum and pry it up.
This one has a fare amount (will have to check my stash for a thicker one) I don't have the spec handy but I tend to go by feel.

These will run just fine with over .080 end play.
If I get it to .050 I am happy.

Next I remove the pump bolts.
I have circled two holes in the pump that have 3/8 course threads that I install some short bolts then use my hook bar to gently remove the pump by working back and fourth from bolt to bolt.

Now that the pump is out is a good time to disassemble the pump to see if you are on a hard part hunt.
The brass color thrust washer is a selective washer that you set your end play with.
20171112_113955.jpg
See the five bolts that hold the pump housing together.....you remove them so the pump will come apart to inspect the pump gears and housing for wear.
20171111_103032.jpg
Look for scoring here.
20171111_103108.jpg
Inspect the pump housing and gears for wear.
20171112_114008.jpg
20171112_113947.jpg
You also want to insect the hole in the middle for wear from the input shaft seal rings.
And the seal ring groves on the out side.
20171112_114217.jpg
This pump passed so lets clean and install new bushing and seal then bolt back together(if the rest of the transmission is junk the pump is worth some bucks anyway).

Hay Phil I got some shoes for you.
My bushing driver of choice.
20171112_112833.jpg
Now you have to keep an eye on this little spring and also check the other pump check valves for proper seating.

You will see a wear pattern on the pump gear to know that it is the side driven by the converter so place that side down in the pump housing.
20171112_112931.jpg
I use some drill bits and or my transfer punch's to line the pump up before tighten the halves.
20171112_113621.jpg
Seal rings..... There are two sets in the kit that look close to the same but the ones with the lock tab go on the pump.
You want to make sure you are careful with the rings and the small lock tab they are very brittle and easy to break.

Hang in guys I have to fix a rusted out brake line on a 4x4 dodge truck and try and trade my 66 elco for a 56 hard top.
Class is excused for now but don't go far.
And there will be a test later.

Don't walk away, James.:dunno Some Wise Ass, may drop a couple Xtra washers, into your pile of hardware, to throw you off.:doh:teehee Years ago. a fellow co-worker, had his Mutigraph 1250 Printing press, half torn apart, Cleaning and replacing the Plate Cylinder. When he left, to go to the bathroom, his buddy Ken, put 2 extra washers, in his pile.:dohPoor Frank, drove himself CRAZY, trying to figure out, where they went.:teehee Finally, as time got close to closing, his buddy confessed to what he did.:roll First, he started laughing, then he got pissed and started calling his friend, many choice words.:doh They didn't stay Mad very long, because they both rode home, with the same driver. It was Funny though.:laugh

I got that lesson early on.....those elders like to watch me learn.
You had to be tough and really want it..... or just be plane crazy to put up with it.

I have lost count of how many of these P/G I have done.
Seen way to many to go to the spoils of the dry pond cars. :sorry2

I know what you mean Phil...sure wish I had a 4 gear to race and play with...maybe someday.
