On The Washington Redskins Name

Here is an email sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins.

Dear Mr. Page,

I always love your articles, and I generally agree with them. I would suggest, as in an email I received, they change the name to the "Foreskins"to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dick heads in Congress.

Here are some other politically-correct thoughts to consider: I agree with our Native American population. I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward. Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white folk.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names -totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children.

The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children.

The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates . Wrong message to our children.

The Milwaukee Brewers---well that goes without saying . . . Wrong message to our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing congress loves . . .

As a die-hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, believe it might also make some sense to change the name of the Oregon State women's athletic teams to something other than "the Beavers."

Keep those cards and letters coming.

These ended up way longer than I intended and I almost deleted the whole thing, but what the heck - - -

First off I wanna say that I have American Indian blood from my father and mother's sides of my family. It is only a small amount and far back on both sides, but I am very proud of it. I take absolutely zero offense to teams using the names Redskins (or Braves, Chiefs, Warriors, etc.) All of the "politically correct" crap in this country is what is offensive to me. The picture Dick posted about them removing Washington from their name sounds about right to me!!
About the "minorities" that receive endless sympathy, handouts, TERMS IN THE HIGHEST OFFICE, etc. for what happened to some people of their race: (even though we all know that every one of them are not direct descendants of slavery, etc.)
I do not consider myself a racist as I try to love all people the same and think everyone should be treated fairly as much as possible. It is the unfairness and "reverse-racism" that gets to me.
There is a little town about 10 miles from me that has a new mayor that is causing them all sorts of trouble. Breaking their city rules, codes, ordinances, bi-laws, whatever you want to call it.....left and right. Has been under investigation since the election for allegedly busing in elderly people from her sister's nursing homes that are in other towns within that county, etc. Hired her husband as a city manager, demands a new car for a town you can walk across in 5 minutes, repeatedly calls for the firing of their police chief who has been with them for 20 years I bet - only because he doesn't bow down to her. Holds city council meetings without letting every council member know about them. ETC. Every time anyone tries to oppose her, she shouts that it is racism. She has even gotten some "personalities" involved with spreading that junk and crying racism from the "small GA town where things haven't progressed since the 50's" :blah:blah:blah They also don't report on all of the people of her own race who want her out of office.
Not one of them has addressed the REAL ISSUES that her citizens are complaining about. I don't live there or even in the same county, but it is a disgrace to everyone around here and it's sad to say that the legal fees are probably going to break that poor little town.

My family and I go up to the Gatlinburg, TN area for vacation every year.....we stop in Cherokee, NC on the way up and down most times. It is very sad to see some of the conditions there. Either extreme poverty or the opposite with the casino there. I saw a sign 2 years ago that said there were 52 (??) full-blooded Cherokee left alive. I had never thought about the reality of the "Extinction" of a people before. It was very thought-provoking. No statistics were posted about the age/sex of those remaining. Or whether they are all living in that area......as I know there are some Cherokee who live on reservations in the Midwest. They can't possibly keep a full-blooded population of any size for much longer without inbreeding. Their end will probably occur within my children's lifetime. I'm sure such extinction happens to "tribes" all across our country (which was their country) and we never consider it. Not much is said about the slavery and other wrongs done to them. It is practically written out of the history books now. How is that politically correct?
