Power Steering: Who to rebuild my cylinder, control and pump?

Can you recommend someone to rebuild the power steering cylinder, the control unit and the pump for my 1960 Impala coupe? I have got all the parts needed to convert my armstrong coupe to power steering (I hope). I know the pump is unique to the 1960 so I want my original parts back. Know of a good place?

I see rebuild kits offered for low cost. Should I try it myself? I'm mechanical but don't have any special tools and have never been inside these units before.

Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you. Bob in Iowa

Do a search on www.chevytalk.org for a user by the name of Jalapeno. He has a company in Texas that repairs and restores power steering rams and components
for tri five chevies. I feel certain he could repair yours as well.

I say do it yourself! I did all of these parts for my 63 and it was super easy.

Late Great Chevy's did articles on how to rebuild each one.

Here is the issues they were in:

Rebuilding power steering pump-Oct 85
Rebuilding power steering cylinder-Sept 85
Rebuilding power steering control valve-Aug 85
Rebuilding power steering box-July 85
Rebuilding front end-June 85

Bob and Mile High are both right. If you are a bit mechanical, the only problems you may run into is if you have severe pitting or something broken. Take lots of pictures as you take it apart so you remember how to put it back together.

I looks pretty simple in the shop manual for my 1960 and is one of the things I need to do my self.

BUT I am not sure if I am running the origanal PS pump. How can you tell what pump you have? Is there a part number listing somewhere?

thanks

very nice on the page links. I think I am running the newer one. My return is on the bottom next to the pressure line. I'll post pics later.

They do sell kits on the older ones at www.partsamerica.com for 14.95 for the pump and about the same on the control valve.

Found that the 1960 kit with two raised mounting pads also fits

Hi Tic,

As I understand it, the 58 and 59 Power Steering pumps were attached behind the generator.
In 60 the new belt drive style pump had the return line up on top near the cap. In 1961, the pump is the same but the return line is lower on the reservoir and the same through 64 (and maybe beyond). 1960 through 64 all fit pretty much the same but the 60 has the odd return plumbing.
