What is the casting date? If it is before Feb 58 it is likely no cooling passages, after Feb 58 should have spark plug cooling and can use any head.

my 348 block is an early 58, the heads are the 791 casting dated feb 24, what are my options for beefing up the engine? could I use the aluminum heads and plug the passages that dont exist in the block? has anybody done that?

Aluminum heads

I believe you can install pipe plugs (probably 1/8" pipe) in the spark plug cooling holes in the heads to run them on the early blocks.

No Holes

My 58' 872 doesn't have the cooling holes in the block or heads but does have the pads on the block where the cooling holes go, if yours does also they can be drilled out for the heads with cooling holes
