Rope seal?

I tried searching the archives & don't see this topic covered.
I finally got enough parts to seriously think about assembling my engine.

Do you guys use the rope seal on the rear main?

I tried putting the mains & crank together & dropped in the crank and that ring-shaped "blade" on the crank between the rear main bearing and the rear seal seems to want to take up the space where the rope seal is. With the rope seal in place the crank won't drop into the bearings.

Am I doing this wrong? Or am I supposed to choose between the rope seal & the rubber seal?

So, they only include it for the hardcore traditionalists?

If I don't need both then I'll ditch it and just keep the blue one.

Gracias

Wow! Good call. The instructions on the package said to put it in with the thick side toward the engine, which puts the lip facing backward.

What you say matches everything else I ever learned about lip seals.

seal

I also rotate mine a little so it's in at say the 1:00 to 2:00 position. Less chance of it leaking. :D
