Recently heard of a guy that put a new lifter in his engine after the cam had already been broken in. Is this safe to do? It was a hydraulic cam. Can this be done with certain types of cams? Or at all?

New lifters?

Although it freaks me out, the word is that you can install new lifters on an old cam. Can't do it the other way around tho! Break them in like you would a new cam.

yes you can put new lifters on an old cam. it will need to broken in like new can though, a couple thousand rpm for 20 or 30 min or so just to insure oil to the lifter. any time a new or used can is used in a different block than origianl, new lifters will need to be installed, never install old lifters with a used can unless it is the same block as originally ran in AND in the same order.
