Back in the late nineties, I traded the 4 speed manual transmission on my 63 Impala 409. It came with an original manual transmission and almost got disowned by the old man when he found out. I traded for the Powerglide which I thought would be a better fit for me at the time. Well now Im going all original and wonder if I should buy a Muncie or Borg Warner but dont know what will fit. I found some on craigslist but dont know if they will fit.Any info or part numbers will help me or any suggestion will be appreciated. Thank you fellas

If you want to go original you will need a 553 aluminum bellhousing. 168 tooth flywheel and either T-10 or muncie depending on when the car was built. Most came with wide ratio T-10, but late in production they switched to Muncie. Shifter was the same but linkage rods different.

Yep, the 010 is 66-67 and has the 1" shaft instead of the 65 and earlier 7/8 so it is stronger. Just make sure you don't try to use the 421 bellhousing which is 63 only (everything except 409) and has a small front bearing support hole. It requires a 63 only T-10 or 63 only Muncie.

So regardless of what I decide to go with, T10 or muncie Im going to need the aluminum bellhousing that they want you to bend over and touch your ankles for, ha!

If you are not concerned with "numbers matching", any Chevy aluminum or iron car bell housing will work for a 10 1/2" clutch setup. That '63 only bell housing and 4 speed were the only odd ball pairing because of the front bearing retainer being a smaller size. Leo

Like Leo says, you don't need the $400 553 bellhousing. Any chevy aluminum bellhousing like the 403 or 383 ($50 approx at the swap meet) will work as long as you use the matching clutch and linkage. Another option is to use a cast iron bell.

The 552 cast bell housing will work fine looks like the 553 alumimun housing. I have 552 bell housings in my 62's.
The 552 housing are reasonable to purchase usually about $ 65 to $100 from what I have seen.
