With both tires in the air, just give one a spin. If the other one turns in the same direction, it's a posi. There is also a large "P" cast into the rear pumpkin front side.

I'm told wagons are the best place to find posi's. :love

My folks had a 59 4dr sedan and a 61 4dr sport sedan. Both had posi's.

Did you want both? I am looking for a good 3.36 posi.

Thanks for the info everyone! Since it takes me 3-4 hours to get there I am trying to gather as much info as possible before hand.
They have 2 62's 1 63 1 64 soon to be crushed so If I find any other good parts I'll post the number and items.

a quicky way to look is to pop the trunk, and look for 2 glue spots...one for the jack instructions and the other for the posi sticker. I found 4 cars this way, then had the yard lift them up, and 3 of the 4 had them...not bad odds

Mr. Jimmy, great idea! I used to do this for Chevelles a while back. While it certainly isn't foolproof, if the car looks to have the original trunk lid and not repainted on the underside, it can be a good inidicator.

Mind if I add this to the Tips/tricks page? I'll give you the credit of course! :D

I promise to not show it to anyone that doesn't read our Tips/Tricks page. :D

Thanks,

Bob

Now, while we're on this subject, there's something that's been bugging me for a long time now. I can't understand why ALL cars didn't just come with posi. :dunno Especially in my state where we have 4 seasons. Out of 7 vehicles I own, only 1 has a posi and that car doesn't even have the original rear!!! Is that pathetic or what? :doh

What was the cost of adding posi back then, $1.29? :roll

I know...its funny....Around here its like posi's came in more 4doors than anything. I bought a 4 door shell at the yard one day for the frame, and heres a posi!!! That made that $200 look great. Then a friend of mines winter beater 4 door has one...actually...someone elses 4 door that I know has one too....

Nothin like doing burnouts with a posi 4 door!!! :brow

Iron case 4-speeds...2nd addition!!

I couldn't bring up these pictures in the original thread so am re-visiting this old one.

Richard...look in the 4th photo. It lists Tachometer for V8 models only (Included with 300-380 & 409HP engines with 4-speed Snychro-Mesh Transmission) $48.45

As I read this.....this would be for a 250HP 327 4-speed. The price for the tach is included in the 4-speed price for the other 327 and 409 engines. In other words, when you ordered the 300-380 and 409 HP engines with a 4-speed....the tach was included at no additional charge.

Now, I never ordered one new....too young and couldn't afford it!! Still don't know if I could!! But this is what I've felt was correct.

Check out all the other 1962 prices. There was a 62 red/red SS convertible, 409 409HP 4-speed...sold this weekend here in KC by a dealer. He was asking $102,000!!!! See how this price compares with the original Retail Price in 1962!!!

4-speeds

Phil, I am looking at the original Retail Order Forms from the 63-65-67 Chevys I bought new when I was young and single. The 63 Biscayne 4-speed was $236.75 with no mention of a Tach. The 65 Impala 4-speed was $188.30. The 67 Chevelle SS 4-speed was $184.35. Why O Why did I sell those cars.
TOTAL PRICES 63 Biscayne 409 $3189.00
65 Impala 327 $3363.50
67 Chevelle 396 $ 2792.76

Phil,
Do you have one of those option/price sheets for 67? I'm trying to find out when the few L-79 Novas were offered. The assembly manual shows a release date of Feb 13, 67 but the few supposedly documented cars were built near the end of production May/June.

Richard,
Thanks for that info. That is part of the mystery. The few supposedly documented cars seem to have the quadrajet and cast iron intake but the assembly manual shows a Holley 3806 and aluminum intake. Neither the service manual nor the assembly manual or CBTN show any quadrajet application for the 325hp 327, only the 275hp. I wonder if they ran out of parts near the end of production and used the 68 L-79 Chevelle carb and intake. Sorry to hijack the thread but I can't help myself when it comes to this historical info.:scratch

Cecil: What adds to the confusion is the 1967 Chevelle L79 engine retained the alum. intake & Holley thru the '67 production year yet was also rated at 325 horsepower. Early 1968 info also shows the L79 327/325 as an optional engine for the '68 Nova.

If anyone is interested I know where there is one that could be had. Came out of a 67 Chevelle and is a factory replacement so, I think it would work in Chevelle, Nova or, Corvette.:dunno

That would work in a 68 Nova but not 67 unless it has the recessed oil filter and relocated clutch pivot. If it's a factory replacement CE block it's probably a 3959512 casting which was the replacement 327 pass. block. The CE Nova 327 block was a 3959538 and the Nova/Chevy II CE 283 block was a 3959534. My 67 has the L-79 warranty replacement shortblock 538 casting with domed pistons, drilled crank, 8 " balancer and timing cover.
I guess we should move this to the small block forum if there is further interest.

I'll see if I can get the casting numbers and post them.
