I finally found a set of illuminiated underdash gauges to install. (Sunpro CP8208)

I'm pretty sure '58's are 12 volt negative ground but can someone chime in to verify?

Ideally I was hoping for and aluminium gauge housing but the chrome will do.

BTW - Anybody found anything better?

Thanks in advance

Thanks - I was fairly certain that 12 volt neg ground was in fact the case.

I may very well powder coat the cluster frame with an aluminum finish to better match the standard dash appointments. :dunno

The existing chromed cluster base just seems a bit too flashy.

However. on the other hand, the cluster base may match the steering wheel and heater control chrome nicely. I'll know more when it arrives.

If I do Powder the cluster I'll take and post pic's when I done.
Either way this mod should turn out pretty cool and add to my peace of mind.

I should be going with a Volts gauge using a generator correct?

Volts = Generator
Amps = Alternator

Sorry folks... But I'm feeling so "electrically challenged" right now :scratch

You can use either one, amps guage/volt guage are not specific to alternator or generator. Volts guage is the most common used and the safest. Hook the volts guage to any switched line under the dash carrying 12 volts.

AMP Gauges

Absolutely, you should use a voltage gauge in ANY case. Amp guages when hooked up to read properly are in the primary unfused battery lead to the ignition switch and pose a HUGE fire hazzard if shorted either internally or across the posts in back. Do NOT use an amp gauge, besides the volt gauge is much more indicitive of the condition of the system any way.

Good luck.

Underdash gauges

Thanks - I feel better now knowing volts is the safer choice.

I switched over to the Sunpro CP 7996 model.
The black face and chrome trim better matches the 58 interior. IMO

I saw the Marchall SCX series but prefer the response of analog over electric.

I'm OK with sound/tight connections in the cab mitigating risks for any leaks.
