Hood hinge spring

I have a 62 Impala. One of the hood hinge springs broke and I need to replace it. I have a new spring. Does anyone have any idea on God's green earth, how to get it on the hinge?

I use a brake tool for mounting brake springs and a vise to mount hinge. Its spooky but I have installed about 30 sets of springs and no flying springs.

I do the hinges in a vice off of the car, I used a big screw driver to guide the hook of the spring over it mounting location. Literally takes less than a minute, takes 10 or more minutes to remove and replace the hinge.
