63 409 Starter Removal + Exhaust

Hi all,
When removing the starter, is it necessary to remove the passenger side exhaust/muffler? I’ve tried various angles and it just won’t drop due to the exhaust pipe being in the way and not enough clearance from flywheel. I have a W engine and the starter is a beefy Delco-Remy from what I can make of it. I don’t have headers, stock manifold. Any information on this is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks all.
I took a little bit of the passenger exhaust pipe down. I read on this site the manifold will be in the way and this was my case. I’m not skilled enough to pull manifold out while the motor is in the car so I ended up cutting the “nipple” of the starter. The starter was toast anyway. Chunks of metal and debris came out once opened. I’m hoping the Powermaster 9426 would be a good option. This site/forum has been great. Spent a good week reading through some of the comments.

On my 63, the starter is pulled out and lifted tail end up and the starter comes out between the block/exhaust nose first down, it's a puzzle and I have the same starter.
I'm wondering, if there's a difference in the exhaust downpipes, from different vendors.:dunno

powermasters are great stuff. I have the 3635 starter on my 1960 348 with cast iron transmission.
But are you sure you want the 9426. Its for an 18:1 compression engine. I think you should read the catalog and maybe give them a call.

I emailed Powermaster and their tech department provided these:
3689
9200
9112
9012
9004-12
9612
9526
9426
9452
I’ll read up on compression. I’ve only owned this car since October 2023 and it’s getting to be a love hate affair.

I just did this on our 62 a few weeks ago. I swapped out a generic block mounted starter for a correctly dated bellhousing mounted unit. After spending some some time investigating I decided it was easier to tackle this by removing the RH exhaust manifold rather than fight the wiring blindly and wrestle the starter out - was much easier this way. No rust issues to contend with so removing the 3 nuts for the head pipe and then the 7 bolts for the manifold and sliding the manifold out of the way didn't take too long and made the starter swap much easier.

Incorrect starter - beginning point

Much easier to access wiring with manifold out of the way

Looks like his was done at an exhaust shop with those bends with dipoles, show cars uses a company that makes a true bend without dipoles in the radius plus OEM.
