I’m going to try and continue my story of my 63 ss. After I got out or the hospital around the 1st of June 1973 I had to have some wheels as I never liked to miss a day of work. The insurance company gave me 700.00 and I kept the car. I went to carpenters Chevrolet on Main Street in durham. The salesman showed me some cars on the lot. I liked the 73 nova on the lot with a 350 and 4 speed . He suggested a new chevelle ss and showed me brochure. It was a bigger car and I liked it. He ordered one from a dealer in liberty nc. While it was on the way I saw some corvettes on the ok used car lot. I looked at a 62 convertible yellow with 4 speed. 327-300. He wanted 2400.00 for it. I liked it but I saw a lot of wiring hanging from under the dash. A car electrician had told me before if a car has wiring issues to stay away from it. I also looked at a 67 stingray coupe with a 427-390 engine with a 4speed. The car was burgandy and had 50000 miles even on it. This car was perfect. The guy said he wanted 3600.00 for it. I opened a valve cover cap and ran my finger under the valve cover. I felt a lot of grit under Meath the valve cover and I felt it had either not been maintained properly or had been run hard. I called my insurance man and he said he would try to run it thru on a standard policy. If not I would have to have a sub-standard policy which would be 1200.00 a year. So I went to pick up the chevelle. It was a super sport with a 350-2 barrel and automatic. It had a 2.94 gear under it. It was black with silver stripes on it. It had a black houndstooth interior with a bench seat. This was the first year for the collanade body style. I get ready to go in the office and I take one more look at the 67 vette. The guy comes over and says if I want that vette he will let me have it for 2500.00. Well I had been accepted at unc in chapel hill that fall and I needed something reliable. So I bought the chevelle for 3600.00. 700 down and 98 dollars a month for 36 months. More later.

Since I don’t have a picture of my new 73 chevelle ss, I wil move on. After I recovered from the total loss wreck of my 1963 ss, I took the car up to my grandmothers farm in Hillsboro nc. I was working full time and taking 9 semester hours at unc. It wasn’t long before I starting looking for another 63. I checked out some cars and drove some. Here are some ads from the mid 70’s that I was checking out some cars;

hey chev, these prices were in 1970’s dollars. I bought my 73 chevelle for 3600.00 so 2500.00 for a 63 ss was a lot of money in those days. Remember they used cars in those days so that those prices reflect that. I came home on leave in October 1969 and i priced a new 69 chevelle. It was an ss with the 396-375 horsepower and it was 3600.00 dollars. The salesman told me for 300.00 he would put aluminum heads on it. All this for 3900.00. Problem was I had to go back to the nam for 6 months before I got out. This is for your info. James jones

After I totaled my 63 I got the fever back pretty quick. I looked at cars in ads and drove several. One ad was for a 1964 ss 409 with 3 speed. I was puzzled by the 3 speed. The car was on the other side of Durham. I went over to this guy’s house. I saw the car outside. It was dark blue and I could swear it had a light blue interior in it even though the pictures I put on here show a black interior. I rang the doorbell and a lady in her 20’s came to the door. She said her husband wasn’t home but I could look the car over. She said her husband had torn a gear out of it thus the 3 speed in the floor. More later.

I asked the lady what her husband wanted for the car. She told me her husband said “500.00 dollars if you are black and 400.00 dollars if you are white.” I know, that is just the way things were back then. Anyway, I go over the next day with 400 dollars. The husband is sitting on the sofa eating a bowl of beans. He asked me if I wanted the boxes of transmission parts in the garage and I said no. We got in the car and he started it up. I had never seen a 409 with a 3 speed in it. He tells me some big time mechanic named earl said it was the fastest stock bodied car he had ever seen. We were going to the dmv to get the title changed. Anyway, he backs out of his driveway in reverse and while still rolling, pops it into first and floors it. O my god, I was pinned back against that bucket seat and could not move. We rolled up onto I-85 and he hits in second gear. That crazy bastard was pegged at around 100 and was passing cars like a wild man. I told him to let me out and he could keep the damned car. So he slows down and go to the dmv and change titles. I had my 63 ss for 2 years but that 64 must have been super tuned to put out that much power. Anyway, got home and checked the car out more closer. The body was straight as an arrow. The paint was faded some. It did not have any wheel covers on it. Only blackwalls. The interior I could swear was blue but the pictures show it black. The interior was like new. Actually, when driving the car at normal speeds it rode like new- steady in the road. Under the hood was all stock with a chrome air cleaner and I can’t remember if it had a carter or Rochester on it. One option it had was some kind was some kind of electrical outlet to plug into house current to warm up the engine block before starting in very cold weather like up north. I have never seen this option on another 64. I wonder if any of you fellows have seen this option before? Close for now. James Jones

You can see in the picture a wire or cable going over the drivers side fenderwell. This was going to the electrical piece that hooked to the household current to heat the block during very cold weather ( like up north ) for easier starting. The only car I ever saw this option. Have any of you fellows seen this option before on a 64? James jones
