Would it be correct to assume the "IS" 55 or 77 includes the middle drive shaft.
Or does the IS apply to non Melling pumps?

I have run m55 HP pumps in both of my 409's with out any problems. I did however use the 409 intermediat shaft.

Oil Pumps

I NEVER INSTALL AN OIL PUMP ON AN ENGINE I AM BUILDING WITH OUT FIRST
SUBMERGING IN A PAN OF OIL AND RUNNING WITH A VARIABLE SPEED DRILL TO MAKE SURE IT PUMPS THERE FIRST. EVEN NEW PUMPS CAN HAVE DEFECTS, KEYS
MISSING, ROLL PINS SHEARED, GEARS LEFT OUT, ETC. MEASURE BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE OIL PUMP ON 348'S ETC FROM THE MANIFOLD DOWN TO THE MAIN BRG CAP INSTALL AREA FOR THE PUMP, THEN MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CORRECT PUMP SHAFT LENGTH TO ENGAGE THE DIST DRIVE GEAR BEFORE YOU EVER BOLT ANYTHING TOGETHER, I HAVE BEEN CAUGHT A FEW TIMES MYSELF, AND THIS IS
VERY EASY TO DO AND SAVE YOU FROM ALL THE GRIEF. HAVE FUN ABOVE ALL:coffee:
