67 Chevelle

I did it again.
67 Chevelle with a boo-boo. Seems a tree fell on it. I can't resist a good challenge and the price was right….$700 delivered.
No rust perfect floors, some rust in lower rear quarters. Originally a 6 cyl 3 speed white with maroon interior. Everything is there except engine and trans. Includes 2 donor tops and a 66 body missing VIN tag, floors, firewall etc.maybe a race car.
Got it in the back yard behind the shop so the wife shouldn't notice when she gets home tomorrow. Got out the portapower and started pulling the top back into something resembling its original shape. Took about and hour and a half. I'm pretty sure I can replace or repair the front and rear headers and put a new top skin on for under $400. I plan on cutting the top skin off tomorrow.
Here's a few before and after pics of the progress so far:

First of all thanks for your comments when I banging my head on my 59. We must have similar interest, my car in waiting is a 67 Chevelle, course I love them all. I bought this one out of Denver because here on the east coast we see nothing but rust. I think you got a winner there, I would much rather replace a top and straighten the pillars than replace every rusty brace in a car. I had to replace a quarter on mine from previous wreck damage but pretty rust free. Just use the small hammer, don't wake the wife.

I love the '67 Chevelle! My first car. I had a Corvette 327 warmed up a bit. I rebuilt that engine in the spare bedroom of the ground level apt. I was renting! I was 19 or 20 years old. Also rebuilt the aluminum housing Muncie 4-speed. That car was QUICK!
Sooooooooooooooooooo.... if you need to get rid of that '67 Chevelle in a hurry, I'll take it. I would love to have another!
I tried to attach pics but the file is too large.

Bob,
Thinking about an engine for the car. What did you have to change to fit the 409 in your 66?
Did you use sb or bb mounts? any probs with the z bar and clutch?
I have a 67 275 hp chevelle EA code 327, a 67 396 IV code, and of course a 65 409 truck block already built into a short block with 817 heads and 881 and Eddy 2x4 intakes and several 3x2 set ups. Also a 4 barrel set up is possible.

All the top structure is ready to go and al I need is the roof skin to weld on and then move on to the drive train.

Been a while but the biggest problems were the oil pan needed to be notched out in front and custom headers made. I ditched the power steering so I could keep my idler pulley too. I think there were other issues to run the PS pump due to clearance with steering box. My Chevelle had a small block in it prior to this so I just used those towers with new 409 mounts. I put a 4 speed in years later so I just welded the Z bar tab where it needed to be. I used all repro Chevelle parts for that.

That's the best my memory will do at 6:14AM. :D

Would a 65 oil pan fit seeming how they changed them to fit the new frames? Also what about 65 manifolds but way too much $ to experiment with unless someone here has a set to loan you for a test fit.

I purchased a pair of 65 manifolds back then hoping they would work but NOPE! I don't think the 65 pan would help much, the front is where it hits the crossmember. I think I have a pic of my pan, I'll go look...

Found a few. One thing I did and regret is I had the guy that did my headers / oil pan add about 1-1/2 inches onto the pan. I was worried that cutting so much from the front would take away too much capacity but it might have been ok. I would probably avoid doing that as it holds about 7.5 quarts now to get to the full line. (and I once walloped it where a road dipped heavily in one of these shithole towns around here! )

The last pic shows the driver side header and how it had to be made to go up and around the steering shaft. In this photo I was installing a 4 speed and needed to put in a Z bar tab. I had to make a few mods to the header tubes to make that work. Not an easy task putting a 409 in a Chevelle. :(
