I have that picture in my 1968 Motor's Manual I never returned to the library! But paid for it

I don't run the bypass. I just use the System One spin on filter and check it after a couple weekends of racing.

I have used SystemOne oil filters for a long time on many 'precious' engines, but recommend that one checks the bottom plate element, some SystemOne filters ship with bypass plate others with non-bypass plate.

For the 348/440, an old style (ribbed), tall, non-bypass SystemOne, with the thinking that filter valve failure or erratic pressure differential of a bypass filter could cause way more damage to the engine than a non-bypass setup.

I never liked those mesh screen type filters. 35 microns is over .001 of an inch and that’s big enough to cause a good amount of wear. A Wix filter (non racing) is rated at 21 microns but they actually filter smaller particles than that.
