Did Chevrolet make an aluminum 4 barrel intake for the small port 409 heads?
I beg to differ. In spite of all that has been published, the 579 was a 348 intake for the 59-early 60 320 hp engines and the 776 was the 61 409 intake. The 3270 61 carb won't work on the 579 intake due to the throttle bore size. The late 60-61 340 hp intake was the 540. It is identical to the 776 except for the intake throttle bore configuration from 4 hole to 3 hole.Well...yes. The '61 409/360 used a single four aluminum intake (3767579) that was the same as used on the '61 348/305 & 340 engines. The aluminum intakes used on the 348 305 & 340 horse engines (3753748, 3767579, 3780540) fit perfectly on the small port 409 heads.
As Don said, they will be expensive and down on power compared to the small port Edelbrock.
I was wondering when someone would bring up the 776 intake .
Figures it would be Cecil .
I beg to differ. In spite of all that has been published, the 579 was a 348 intake for the 59-early 60 315/320 hp engines and the 776 was the 61 409 intake. The 3270 61 carb won't work on the 579 intake due to the throttle bore size. The late 60-61 34o hp intake was the 540. It is identical to the 776 except for the intake throttle bore configuration from 4 hole to 3 hole.
That's interesting. How long ago was that and do you know if it was an early or late production?Cecil, thanks for the clarification. I know there's some....errr....'discussion' on which intake was correct for the '61 409's. So much so that I was hesitant to even put this on here.
I can only relate my single experience many years ago with the only real '61 409 I've ever encountered: the 579 intake was removed from a real '61 409. It did have the correct '61 409 #3270 carb on it. Had I not removed it myself from a local car with a known history, I would have been skeptical, too.
The rest of the car is a sad, sad story. The intake and carb were virtually the last pieces left.

All of the 305 motors that Ive seen had cast iron intakes.Well...yes. The '61 409/360 used a single four aluminum intake (3767579) that was the same as used on the '61 348/305 & 340 engines.
