Races won by the 348 and 409

NHRA, guys with bottles of water in there pockets at weigh in, after the race they get handed a bottle of water before weigh in.

I remember hearing a story of Nascar guys going to the weigh in with all four tires full of water,,, then running back to the pits and putting on a set filled with air.
I also remember hearing about them filling the rollcage with BB's or birdshot,,, then removing a cap that let them all drain out.
Of course, Nascar soon got wind of this and started to demand a weigh in AFTER the race too. I gather that this lead to even more creativity.
The guy telling the story said some teams had a way of putting the weight back in. Apparently, they would put a bunch of lead shot into the gas can and empty it into the tank on the last pit stop.
He said the gas cans were so heavy that you could see the pit crew struggling to lift them.

I recently read that Junior Johnson won the 1960 Daytona 500 with a 348 powered Chevy. I dodn't know that. It got me to wondering if there was a list of wins by 348-409 cars. If not, maybe we should start one. Here's a few that I've heard about but I can't say 100 percent that I'm right about these...

1960... Junior Johnson wins the Daytona 500
1961... Ned Jarrett wins the Nascar Championship
1961... Frank Saunders wins Super Stock at the Winternationals
1961... Don Nicholson wins Stock Eliminator at the Winternationals
1962... Don Nicholson wins Stock Eliminator at the Winternationals again

1962... Dave Strickler wins SS/S at the US Nationals

I also remember reading somewhere that a 348 or 409 powered car won it's class at Pikes Peak

If anybody knows of other wins or can make any corrections to this list please post them. Maybe we can compile a complete list.

Dyno Don also won Stock Eliminator at Indy in 61. His car ran in O/SS,optional
super stock. However, he was later disqualified because he had the new GM valve springs that were not yet approved for use.

Some small corrections:

Sanders (L/P 63 Winters) and Dickie Harrell(B/FX Winters) were both DQ’d taking the runner ups with them.

You’ll notice in the attached pic the 63 Winters B/FX class result has been omitted - Harrell was one of those unfortunate few like Nicholson and Gay who were presented with the trophy and THEN got the bad news.

Sanders went through hell - First the Z11s got put into L/MP rather than S/S due to build #s - and then the techs went to town...DQ’ing him for incorrect cyl volume and valve height.

Worse, back then if the winner was DQ’d...the class or Eliminator was dumped.
