How many rear end gear ratios were there in 63 full size chevys?
Can anyone list them? Thanks, Paul

For 58-64, all models, all body styles, this should be them:
( 55-57 use the same gears, but the 3.55 & 3.70 are MUCH more common in them )

3.08 ( estimate 25% of the cars )
3.36 ( 65 % )
3.55 ( 3%... primarilly 58-62 6 cyl 3 spd wagons )
3.70 ( 4%... primarilly 6 cyl & 283 3 spd overdrive models )
4.11 ( 2%... some 3 spd overdrive, and special order performance )
4.56, 4.88, 5.13, 5.38... ( together making up the remaining 1% )
5.57 ( to my knowledge, available in aftermarket only... I have a set from Zoom, in case of an encounter with an 1/8 mile track )

The above are obviously not exact figures, but should give a pretty good idea when trying to locate a certain ratio.:coffee:

Aubrey, do you know where I can pick up a 3:36 ring and pinion for a posi new? I am running a 3:70 posi now.
Would like to be able to cruise a little more this year. I am doing a 4 speed this spring and I would like to change cam to a milder one. Any suggestions on a cam?
I am running a 409 QA motor with dual quads and a Z-11 cam grind. I want to detune for more street use. Paul

aaah, Don... THAT would be them:eek:
Never even heard of 6.14's for these rears:dunno

I don't know if NEW 3.36's are available, Paul... but I DO know that I've never seen a set that failed. VERY reliable combination.
Would be no problem at all to find a good used set ( vast majority of these cars had 3.36's )

Cam ?
If you'd like to stay mechanical, I'd recommend something with about the same lift, a tighter lobe seperation ( 110-108 ), and 8-10 degrees less duration @ .050", with a lot shorter seat timing. Better fuel economy, and better mid range torque:deal.
Hydraulic ?.... you'll need about 15 degrees less duration.
Either way, you should be able to utilize your existing springs.

DO send me a PM if you'd like to talk about it:coffee:

Over the years I have gotten two 4.11 sets. Both came from 6cyl overdrive cars. Something to think about when scrounging the yards looking for the higher (numerically) gears. When looking at swap meets it seems all I come across are 3.55s. I was looking for a 3.08 set for long distance cruising and all I could find were 3.55s. Then I stumbled across a complete rear with a 3.36 posi for, get this $125.

Were the 3.55s standard in the 55-57 years and the 3.36 standard in 58-64?

1955-1956 3:55 were the norm with autos, 3:70-4:11 with 3 spd sticks. 1957 went to 3:36 w/auto 1957 also first year for 14" wheels. The 3:08's started sometime after 1957. More common in 62 and above.

Word of Caution

the 55-56 ring gears are not compatable with posi carriers. it can be done with an odd ball ring gear spacer. i forget the size but i think it was somewhere around .150 thick.

I thought I had what somebody needed, turns out I have a clean used 355 open rearend, not the 336 that I thought it was, I checked my receipts and it was a 336 posi that I had built for my car and the 355 open is what I took out, I guess I need another gig of memory, maybe even two gigs. Also have a loose series 4 posi that probably needs a going through, used the case for my series 3 posi build and threw out the 513 gears that were in it, pitted and rusty where they made contact with the garage floor, I bought it that way.
