From my experiances working on those vehicles,if it had the 400 emblem on the fenders,it was a 402 bigblock powered vehicle. The 400 in smallblock vehicles had no fender emblem on them at all.
Don , With all due respect , The 70 & 71 Impala with a 400 small block MOST definitely had "400 " on the fenders. My brother had a 71 Impala with them and I KNOW that the 70 Impala had them also. If you want I can get you the parts number and the listing description from my Chevy parts book. From my experiances working on those vehicles,if it had the 400 emblem on the fenders,it was a 402 bigblock powered vehicle. The 400 in smallblock vehicles had no fender emblem on them at all.
I realize that.Well Dan,It just could be that since the 400 sb wasnt introduced until 1970 that...........
Don , Here is some info from my Chevrolet parts bookThanks Butch,it's just that I ever worked on were that way.I had a customer that had a 71 wagon with 400 emblems on it,and was a bigblock car.His wife had a 71 Impala sedan with a 400 smallblock in it,and no emblems on it.Both cars were bought new, from the same dealership,on the same day.Every car or light truck that I worked on from that era,if it had 400 emblems on,it had a Rat under the hood. That's all I had to go on.
I thought we were talking about pickups not passenger cars... The 402 emblem was 400.Don , Here is some info from my Chevrolet parts book

1970 was the last year Chevrolet used the 396 emblem on any of the pickup trucks. All 71'-72 with 400 emblems were 402 BBC. No SBC 400's in ANY 70'-72' pickups... How do I know? I owned them. If you don't believe me Maybe Hemmings will convince you.Dan , My post states at the bottom 1970-71-72 C-10/20/30 trucks ( 8.147=3981897 ) 400 emblems
The picture of the yellow pickup engine compartment has so much clutter how can you tell if there is a Big block or small block in there ???
I say small block. How did you come up with your info (May I ask )? They did put a 396 in that truck also. That emblem would say 396 There is no 402 emblem part # listed..
Thank You Don !!! I stand corrected !!
I'm going for new glasses before our Florida trip in April.
Hey Don .... You don't have to chop my head off. I said I stand corrected Thanks to Don. I worked for Chevrolet for many years. That's got to be good for something.1970 was the last year Chevrolet used the 396 emblem on any of the pickup trucks. All 71'-72 with 400 emblems were 402 BBC. No SBC 400's in ANY 70'-72' pickups...
