While we're on the subject of 400 sb's,if anyone is considering building one,the 73 and later 2 bolt main blocks are a better/stronger place to start than the 70-72 4 boly main blocks. The bottom end of the 2 bolt main blocks are stronger.

From my experiances working on those vehicles,if it had the 400 emblem on the fenders,it was a 402 bigblock powered vehicle. The 400 in smallblock vehicles had no fender emblem on them at all.

When I was in high school, I had a 71 Impala that had 400 emblems on the front fenders and it had a SBC 400.....:dunno

Don , With all due respect , The 70 & 71 Impala with a 400 small block MOST definitely had "400 " on the fenders. My brother had a 71 Impala with them and I KNOW that the 70 Impala had them also. If you want I can get you the parts number and the listing description from my Chevy parts book.:pop

The 1971 Chevrolet Impala was the first of the second generation of Impalas, a generation which would be best known for...being known for little. What had started out as a powerful car soon became best known as being a fleet car.
The 1971 Impala grew its wheelbase to 121.5 inches after being at 119 for over a decade. The standard engine, however, shrunk a bit; it was still a 250-cid inline 6, but had been reduced to 145 horsepower. The standard V8 continued to be a 350 cid small-block with horsepower down 5 to 245. All engines across-the-board had lower compression ratios per GM corporate mandate to enable the use of lower-octane unleaded gasoline with horsepower dropping accordingly. Optional engines included a 255-horsepower 400, 300-horsepower 402 and 365-horsepower 454. The 400 was basically a stroked 350 small-block while the 402 and 454 were big-block engines.
Impalas today are a whole new story: these cars are easily tuned and rebuilt, so have become popular restoration cars. The best part is that they can be restored to better than original.

Thanks Butch,it's just that I ever worked on were that way.I had a customer that had a 71 wagon with 400 emblems on it,and was a bigblock car.His wife had a 71 Impala sedan with a 400 smallblock in it,and no emblems on it.Both cars were bought new, from the same dealership,on the same day.Every car or light truck that I worked on from that era,if it had 400 emblems on,it had a Rat under the hood. That's all I had to go on.

Good info Dan. I'm on board. My issue is with someone at GM and how they came up with a 400 emblem for a .030 over 396 engine. If it's a 402, put 402 emblems on it.:bat Leo

Dan , My post states at the bottom 1970-71-72 C-10/20/30 trucks ( 8.147=3981897 ) 400 emblems
The picture of the yellow pickup engine compartment has so much clutter how can you tell if there is a Big block or small block in there ???
I say small block. How did you come up with your info (May I ask )? They did put a 396 in that truck also. That emblem would say 396 There is no 402 emblem part # listed..:rub:dunno

Butch,The picture of the yellow truck that Dan posted IS a bigblock. If you look at the picture of the front/center of the engine area, you'll see the wide valve cover, and the valve cover hold down boly that's in the wrong place for a smallblock.:taunt

1970 was the last year Chevrolet used the 396 emblem on any of the pickup trucks. All 71'-72 with 400 emblems were 402 BBC. No SBC 400's in ANY 70'-72' pickups...:bat How do I know? I owned them. If you don't believe me Maybe Hemmings will convince you.

Hey Don .... You don't have to chop my head off. I said I stand corrected Thanks to Don. I worked for Chevrolet for many years. That's got to be good for something.
Here's an F.Y.I. I don't give a crap what engine is in what truck or car , so long as it's a "W". I was just stating what I know to be fact. I don't have to make this stuff up. I don't have to impress any one with my Chevrolet knowledge.
I don't have to be convinced by any any automotive RAG.
