    Muffler advice

I have not heard of SSM before. It says they use various levels of baffling and I wonder about restriction. I have dynomax ultraflow welded mufflers with 2-1/2" all the way--very low and serious rumble but not too loud until you step on it. If you want quiet at idle, the dynomax super turbos...

    need to know--headers

I'm not currently looking for headers for my 61 although I certainly like the idea. I think a shorter, spin-on filter would be an acceptable compromise and the starter would be a second possible compromise if the headers can be made to bolt up without cutting, and no clearance or heat issues...

How long have you owned your classic car???

My first car was a 50's musclecar--a 57 New Yorker with a 392 Hemi (but dad made me sell it). I'd like to have another one now! I've had my 61 409 for 4 years now and plan to keep it. A few more fixes to go and it will be reliable... ;)

    65 Rochester

Well, the 4GC I got from Walden Automotive, which was supposed to be from a 340hp 409 looks exactly like the one in your picture. The bores are 1.562 primary, 1.687 secondary which is supposed to flow 690CFM, according to the carb manual I have. The fuel inlet is angled somewhat downward from...

    Cranking a 409 Reliably

I've had a lot of trouble getting my engine to crank reliably (it doesn't even move a lot of times). I know that some of the problem is old ignition wiring and the starter is not a high output one, but I have not had time/money for those things yet. Thought it might be the starter solenoid...

    Posi rears

I got one of the new US gear posi's put into my open 3.08 rear last year when they first came out and it seems to work good. Have not had it to the track, though. Got mine from Tom's Differentials for $335

    water valve

My valve has always been stuck open and I have not been able to find a replacement. If the heater trap door works right, the door does close off all the air through the coil so I don't worry about it. Here is a pic of how mine is hooked up

    '61 Impala Heater Core

Hey Cory, The new '61 heater core on the a-1 website looks good--I would buy that instead of tweaking a new '62 core to fit. Good luck with your car. I enjoy mine a lot--except when something breaks! Corey P.S. Let us know if the core works out well--good to know for future reference.

    327 Small 4GC vs 409 Big 4GC issues...

I don't know enough to talk jet sizes, but I ran a small bore 4GC on my lo-po 409 this last year until I could get the big bore GC rebuilt and the car ran o.k., just didn't have as much pull on the upper end. PS Aren't there three different 4GC throttle bore size combinations? You are...

    '61 Impala Heater Core

I couldn't find one back a couple of years ago when I needed it either. I bought one for a '62 that had similar output locations for the hose attachment but it was about 2? inches shorter overall. Put small plate across the gap and fiddled with the mounting screw locations and it turned out...

    348 hi-horse exhaust manifolds

Mine has the threaded fitting perpendicular out the side and it lines up with the manifold tube I purchased for it. Not positive if its correct, but I believe it is.
