35-40 years ago I was sitting at my shop desk taking a break. I was thinking that I had a 62 and a 64 and maybe I should find a 63. I wondered what happens to Smith's old race car.
The phone rings. It was a racing buddy from the same town Smith was from.
Smith had borrowed some money from his employer and put the car up for collateral. Smith quit his job and just flipped him the title for the car and walked out. The employer wanted to get the car gone and get his money back.
$600 and a 150 mile round trip I had a 63.
It has a 9.3 Pontiac rear spool and axles, told 5.14 gears. 90/10 shocks. Otherwise stripped out.
Tacky body work and a weak floor I just figured I bought some parts and parked it to the side.
Lately I don't see much better out there for cheap so I might bring it in and fix it.
Thinking 409 with 3.76 crank. I bought Bryan Fugates cam and have a header kit from show-cars.

Before I figured out 348s and 409s were "The Bomb" I collected two door drop tops and coupes with 4 cylinder engines and four speeds from Europe...
Nice Moggy, Tom.
My first car was a 57 Morris Minor 1000 Tourer. I paid $ 50.00 for it in late 1966 and it needed everything. My sister liked it so much that she bought a 61 2 door saloon along with a 62 parts car. That turned out to be a good move because she kicked a rod out of the old 948 one day due to lack of oil.
In 69 I traded my now rebuilt, painted and upholstered 57 for a 62 Impala SS 327 4 speed. The Chevy was pretty well beaten and tired, but it was too cool to pass up such a deal. The owner was a highly motivated friend of mine who had just gotten married and was desperate for more economical wheels.
Good times!
