My Delco starter has started grinding again….is there a brace that can go on the backside of the starter to support it?

Grinding from starter was caused by a lip on dust shield acting as a big shim.
I ran a Powermaster XS Torque for a week because the teeth on the Delco were trashed…….it did not sound good.
Picked up new Delco today, while switching I noticed both starters has same # of teeth, but gap on Delco seemed wider at the base.
It starts perfectly now.
I even put lug nuts on all the studs today…..CRAZY!

Brakes have 14# vacuum at idle and 20# above 1000rpm……brakes will pump up so I believe I still have air in the lines so I bought a vacuum pump to bleed them….hope that works.
Guy 2 towns over had a nice original hood…excited about that.image.jpg

Today was a first…..took the coupe down my local FM road to town and got some gas….first time on the road.
Transmission works great…..GPS had me at 60mph and 409 was turning 1100rpm.

Went to come home and the starter acted up again….had to borrow a screwdriver to turn the flexplate maybe 1/2” and it engaged and started. This has me baffled.

I went to an old school starter/alternator repair shop in Ft.Worth today to search out knowledge..…the man had it……
3 bolt holes in the bottom of the 409 block at the starter are not used as I thought….
He brought up a cast iron starter nose cone for this application…..he said Chevys had the issue with the starter’s torque moving the starter around causing the holes to get wallered out(Texas term…sorry).
To fix this Chevy built a starter cone that used the two bolt holes straight across from each other, the third (offset) hole holds An Allignment pin to keep the starter from twisting.
His nose cone has the 2 bolt holes and a blind hole for the pin to go into.
He is putting one together for me……

Has anyone heard of this style nose cone?

He also told me to carefully inspect the outside starter hole for cracks….he said after the offset bolt pattern starters were available and the pin was no used that the torque was hard on the outer bolt and because it was on that area of block it could eventually crack……he said he had seen many repairs of those cracks by welding all the way around the edge of the block on both sides of the bolt hole and it held fine.

Well…..I received the starter and it would not fit……pin fit the rear hole and bolt lined up with the outside bolt but the inside bolt was 3/8” inside the starter hole.
The shop put a new nose on the starter using the offset pattern and refunded the difference.

I was disappointed but the new nose is NEW….not refurbished….so the bolt holes are tight, unlike the refurbished starter I had with wallered out bolt holes.

I noticed that the starter had eaten 3 more teeth from the ring so I have purchased a nice heavy duty ATI flexplate and I will pull the engine…..again…..next week.
Will at that time test fit the new starter, pull the plugs, and spin her over……is all I know to do.
This flexplate has excellent reviews about being flat and round…..we shall see.
