What big block Chevy do you have? So I’ve done a little research tonight and James was asking me a few questions. Apparently I have a February 28 of 65 standard bore 409 block, and the 63/409 truck block Both are standard bore. And a August 18 of 65 396. It was also the same block that was used in 66 for the 427. Those cylinder wall thickness on this block is incredible. And I could take it to a 427 easy. 4.250 :D I have about four or five other big block Chevy’s I need to get the casting numbers off of and I will list them too. I feel fortunate to have a 1965 409 block and a 1965 396 block. Now if I just had my old 65 impala first vehicle. Oh well I’m content with the 63 Belair. Tell us what you have laying round and what your dream is.

There are 2 1965 396 casting #'s 961 which is a 2 bolt and 962 which is a 4 bolt .. I know for a fact that the 962 is thick wall , the 961 i'm not sure of .. I have a 962 .... a very desirable block for the Corvette crowd , Z-16 & 425 horsepower Impala's ..... The 66 427 casting # is 942 .... :) I also have one of these ....

Pat, 62 casting date That seems like a mystery to me:teeheemine is the 961, the only difference between the two is the four bolt main caps, The 961 could have two or four bolt mains. The 962 only had four bolt mains. The block thicknesses are the same. 3855961 Big Block V8 1965-1966 396, 2 bolt or 4 bolt 3855962 Big Block V8 1965-1966 396, 4 bolt ... source is

Shouldn’t the tape holding the spark plug wires to the valve covers be silver or gray?:appl:facepalm

I think there’s a half inch hole on the four bolt next to the oil filter flange for the oil cooler, also not too far from where the ball for the Z bar goes into the block. Almost all four bolt main blocks have that big half inch hole for an oil cooler. Never seen one on a two bolt main yet. I guess unless somebody put four bolt caps on it and had a line bored and honed....

All I have is my L-78 Nova and a L-88 crate short block with 188 iron heads in a 64 Impala. 77,79,82,94 pickups with 454s. A 454 block with 70 ls5 suffex code. A few more 512 and 289 number blocks. A few 427 truck blocks. One 68 396 in case i decide to put my Camaro race car back to stock.

Mine takes a 409 oil pan and a Z-11 crank and balancer.
