    61 348 Crankcase Ventilation

This clears up my foggy memory. Thanks for the explanation. I had heard that the sheet metal baffle purpose in life was to keep oil off the underside of the exhaust crossover cast into the intake manifold and burning. So in the W motor the baffle must has two purposes - this one and to keep oil...

    61 348 Crankcase Ventilation

Don - Not much oil, just enough to p** me off. No drips, just an oil smear on the floor within an hour of shutting it off, then no more oil. I have had a 348/305 horse and a 409/380 horse and not a drop ever from either of those two. The one in question is a 348/350 horse. Although the...

    61 348 Crankcase Ventilation

Thanks for the info. I suspect the baffle may not be installed, but before I pop the intake manifold, I want to be sure of what to expect. Seems like I have seen them in every Chevy motor before the mid sixties, but now that I'm in my mid sixties, I'm not sure of anything anymore.

    61 348 Crankcase Ventilation

I'm trying to troubleshoot oil dripping down the road draft tube after some "aggressive " driving. Did the 61 348 use a baffle inside the crankcase? In the small block, there was a beer can baffle or oil separator that connected to the road draft tube.

    1962 409 Assembly line photo

In frame 17, is that a 5 1/2 inch rim or 6 inch rim and tire going on that 09?? Just kidding from one who got sucked up into the 5 1/2 vs 6 inch rim debate. Go back to opening your packages.

What kind of carb does this use???

I like my Impalas red, without a top, three pedals and AM radios.

What kind of carb does this use???

This is getting interesting. The photo that 348nut posted shows the 540 casting# behind the secondary bores. I believe the 540 was used on hi-po 1959 /60 cars. The photo that DQ409 posted may be the later aluminum version used on the 61 hi-po 348. It looks to me that the skewed upper runners...

What kind of carb does this use???

Here is my 2 cents. I think it is a 3767579 used on the 61 305, 340 and 409/360 engines. Look at Alan Colvin's "Chevrolet by the Numbers" pg 121. The blueprint shows the same runner profile for the #2 & 3 cyl. My 61 348/305 has a Carter AFB 3221. This looks like most early 60's vintage AFB's...

    Rear upper control arms

I have never seen a double arm an any 58-64, but have heard of them on hi-po 62 - 63 cars. I know the drag racers used to install a second arm themselves on many cars of this vintage to try and stabilize the axle during drag racing acceleration.

    61 Impala SS

Another question on an old thread. I may or may not have a factory 61SS. I bought it about 10 years ago with old, but all correct stuff still on it - trim, emblems & accessories. Even the correct hub caps with spinners and without the knockouts for the plastic cross flag emblems. The grab bar...

    air intake horns

I went out and measured the 3 x 2 air cleaner on my set-up. The distance center to center is about 21 inches measured at the inlets. They are greater than 90 degrees apart. The Pontiac and other GM 3x3 air cleaners had a much smaller span between the intakes. Be careful!

    Dash Molding

I'm having the same problem. I can't help right off, but here are two things I have run across. What make the piece difficult is that the manufacturing process including first silk printing the black lines on flat anodized aluminum sheets, and then stamping the piece to get the rippled finish...

    Order of Assembly

Restoring a 61 bubbletop 348/350 HP 4 gear. I have a question about the order of assembly. I am about ready to put on the 61 Impala side moldings. The question is: is the trunk splatter painted first then the moldings installed, or was the trunk splatter painted after the molding were on. This...
